How it’s worked out

  1. Wall = 10 m × 2.7 m − 0 m² = 27 m²
  2. One skin = 1 ÷ (0.232 m × 0.083 m) = 51.9 bricks per m², × 2 skins = 103.9
  3. Bricks = 27 × 103.9 × 1.05 = 2,945
  4. Mortar = wall volume − brick volume, × 1.3 = 1.53 m³
  5. Cement = 1.53 × 5 bags = 7.6, rounded up to 8
  6. Sand = 1.53 × 1.2 = 1.84 m³, ordered as 2 m³

Assumptions

  • Standard clay bricks, 222 × 106 × 73 mm, with 10 mm mortar joints.
  • A 220 mm wall is two skins side by side with a 10 mm joint between them.
  • Class II mortar, per m³: 5 bags of cement and 1.2 m³ of damp building sand (damp sand bulks up).
  • A straight wall: corners and piers aren’t counted twice, and brickforce is listed separately.

Waste allowance

  • 5% on bricks for breakage and cuts. 30% on mortar for what drops off the trowel.

Ask your engineer to confirm

  • Which mortar class goes where: usually class I below the damp-proof course (plastic strip in the wall), class II above.
  • Brickforce (wire in the joints) and wall ties for 220 mm walls, and how often.
