How it’s worked out

  1. Footings = 23.7 m × 0.6 m × 0.23 m = 3.27 m³
  2. Slab = 27.45 m² × 0.085 m = 2.33 m³
  3. Concrete = (3.27 + 2.33) × 1.08 = 6.05 m³
  4. Concrete mix = 6.05 × 1.3 = 7.87, rounded up to 8 m³
  5. Cement = 6.05 × 7 bags = 42.4, rounded up to 43 bags
  6. Mesh = 27.45 m² × 1.15 ÷ 14.4 m² a sheet = 2.19, rounded up to 3

Assumptions

  • Strip footings under every wall, plus one ground slab. Sizes in metres in the working.
  • 7 bags of 50 kg cement per m³ of concrete, about a 25 MPa site mix.
  • 1.3 m³ of concrete mix (sand and stone, loose) per m³ of concrete.
  • Ref 193 mesh (welded steel mesh for the slab) comes in 2.4 × 6 m sheets, 14.4 m² each.

Waste allowance

  • 8% on concrete for over-dig, uneven trenches and spill. 15% on mesh, where sheets overlap.

Ask your engineer to confirm

  • Footing width and depth: the engineer sets these to suit your soil (SANS 10400-H).
  • Concrete strength and the mesh, and how much concrete cover the mesh needs.
  • Whether the slab must be thickened under internal walls.
